As a recent winner of the 2006 Juilliard Concerto Competition, and already a local favorite upon a successful recital appearance last year in Waynesville, we are proud to introduce Konstantin to you on our season finale. Our season comes to a spectacular close when we collaborate with Asheville's famed Red Herring Puppets on Stravinsky's ballet Petrushka, with life-sized puppets "dancing" the roles of Petrushka the clown, the boorish Moor, and the beautiful Ballerina. We hope you will join us for a very special night of music to cap a very special season of great music with your Asheville Symphony Orchestra.

Mountain Music and Dance Frolic

This spring Vance Birthplace State Historic Site will be hosting a series of living history events to celebrate the traditions of our forefathers. The highlight of the Saturday Event Series will be an Old-time Frolic. The Frolic will take place Saturday May 17th at 5:00 p.m. in honor of Zeb Vances birthday. Zebulon Vance, a 19th century political force, was born in Reems Creek Valley on May 13th, 1830 and was a known fan of mountain music. In fact, at one particular debate in his 1858 campaign for congress, Zeb entertained followers by playing traditional mountain tunes on his fiddle. Fiddle music and dancing go hand-in-hand, and frolics grew quite popular in the years prior to and following the Civil War. In many mountain communities, these dances provided the rare chance for socialization. After log raisins, corn shuckins, and other types of community workings; folks would clear out the furniture, throw down the corn meal, and dance the night away. Couples would join together to make a square and would alter their dance figures at the direction of the caller, with each community having their own unique and distinctive ways of making the figures. Dancers at the Vance Birthplaces Old-time Frolic will be altering their dance moves at the direction of veteran dance caller, Peter Gott. Throughout western North Carolina, Mr. Gott is well known as a dance caller, folklorist, and musician. Helping keep his dance moves in time at this upcoming event, will be legendary fiddler Roger Howell and the original Carolina Old-timers. Jerry Sutton will be playing guitar, Bob Gregory on the banjo, and Cathy Arrowood picking the stand-up bass. Folks are invited to string up their dancing shoes and join in, or sit back and enjoy the show from their lawn chairs! Admission will be free.

Buille in concert

It is rare that an individual instrument is reinvented by an individual musician, but according to The Irish Times and other raving critics, this is precisely what Niall Vallely (brother to Lnasas piper, Cillian Vallely) has accomplished with his concertina. Add to his virtuosic playing, his brother Caoimhn on piano (another member of the talented Vallely clan) and guitar powerhouse Paul Meehan (formerly with Dorsa, the Karan Casey Band, and Lnasa) and you have Buille, one of the most potent new sounds emerging from Ireland. In the words of The Irish Times, As fresh a breath thats blown through traditional and roots circles in a long, long time.
